4-year old cello soloist Marcin Zdunik won the 2007 LutosÅ‚awski International Cello Competition in Warsaw and has not looked back since. He performs Saint-Saens’ lyrical first cello concerto which immediately became popular among cellists and audiences following its first performance in 1873. Beethoven, though not known for writing humorous music, displays a sense of fun in his symphony no.8 – not least in its protracted finale. Opening the programme is another late symphony by another great symphonist, ‘The Drum Roll’ by Franz Joseph Haydn.
