Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfeild.

Do you have any pets?
*Sad face* Not at the moment. I had a hamster but he died a few years ago. I hope to get another pet soon!

How old were you when you decided to become a musician?

That's a tricky question. I started playing (the violin) when I was nine. I probably decided I wanted to play professionally when I was about 14. It wasn't until after music college (in my 20's) that I switched to the viola, in fact I originally joined CLS as a violinist!

If that hadn't worked out, what would you have become instead?
I would have tried to become an artist.

Who is your musical hero?
Dinu Lipatti. He was a Romanian pianist whose piano playing is magical.

When did you join CLS?
Many, many years ago! I think it was 1984 or '85, right after music college. I had to wait 6 months for an audition with the leader because he was so busy.

What do you like best about playing with CLS?

The variety of work.

What was it like when you played in public for the first time?
It was so long ago, I can't remember! I was always a bit of a show off as a child, so I think I loved it!

How do you get ready for a performance?

I like to really learn the music in advance so that I can relax on the day.

How often do you practise?
It's not quantity, it's quality! But I do practice almost every day. Sometimes for many hours, sometimes just a bit. I've learned how to practice effectively so that I don't waste hours.

If you didn't play your instrument , what would you play?
The double bass because I love its earthiness.
