
Commissioned into the Royal Air Force in 1970, Jock Stirrup served initially as a pilot instructor and in fighter reconnaissance, which included service with the Omani and US Air Forces.
In the 1980s he commanded No 2 (AC) Squadron in Germany. Later, at the time of the first Gulf War, he commanded RAF Marham in Norfolk.
After attending the Royal College of Defence Studies and the Higher Command and Staff Course, he served in several senior roles before being appointed Assistant Chief of the Air Staff. In 2000 he became Deputy Commander in Chief Royal Air Force Strike Command.
Immediately following 9/11 he commanded the British element of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. After a tour as Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff for Equipment he became Chief of the Air Staff, and subsequently Chief of the Defence Staff.
As a life peer he is particularly involved in defence, security, foreign relations and the arts. Married with one son, he enjoys history, music and the theatre.
