City of London Sinfonia works in schools, nurseries, prisons and community settings across the UK and beyond. Projects happen regularly in areas in which the Orchestra hold concert series, including High Wycombe, Chatham and the Eastern region as well as in London.
Music can play an important role in the development and learning of babies and toddlers. CLS has worked on a number of projects in early years settings including collaborating with Norfolk library teams on a programme of activities with under-fives and recently performing The Lullaby Concerts, a series of orchestral concerts and related workshops in community venues and theatres across Suffolk. As part of our partnership with Wycombe District Council, a series of Lullaby workshops will take place in early years settings in High Wycombe this spring.
Work in schools is often centred around creative compositional projects. CLS musicians work in primary and secondary schools with composers and music animateurs to develop musical material with children and young people and work toward joint performances. Workshops can be developed to fit into curriculum subjects or to link with extra-curricular activities within the school setting.
"Some of the kids had never publicly performed before. It was a real milestone for their confidence. To be given the opportunity was just fantastic."
Julia Schubert, Westgate Youth Group, Ipswich
Projects have taken place in HMP Wandsworth and HMP Belmarsh. Musicians work with experienced workshop leaders and prison staff to deliver creative, inspiring sessions to prisoners, working together to achieve the joint goal of musical performance. CLS has a strong relationship with specialist workshop leaders who develop and lead these challenging sessions.
