Community & Education
Founded in 1988, City of London Sinfonia’s education and outreach programme was one of the first such programmes to be established by a UK orchestra. Orchestra musicians spend many hours outside the concert hall working with young people, in prisons, hospitals and in residential homes bringing music making to life. Our Meet the Music programme involves two strands of work:
Growth through Music brings music and musicians into schools, nurseries, prisons and community settings in a variety of UK regions. Last autumn, CLS embarked on a Lullaby Concerts tour and related workshops for very young children across Suffolk and will be extending this work in 2011. CLS is also a regular partner with Opera Holland Park Inspire bringing music into schools and youth settings in West London.
Wellbeing through Music includes work in the field of health and wellbeing, including CLS’s regular visits to Great Ormond Street Hospital and to residential homes for elderly Jewish refugees and holocaust survivors. The newest area of engagement sees CLS collaborating with the Dementia Research Centre experimenting with music support to sufferers of a particular type of dementia called Primary Progressive Aphasia.
