Haydn and Vaughan Williams were both writing in the shadow of approaching war - Haydn in 1796, as Napoleon advanced on Vienna and Vaughn Williams in 1936. Both works end with the heartfelt plea 'Dona nobis pacem: Grant us peace'. The text of Vaughn William's profoundly moving cantata, derived principally from the Bible and the poems of Walt Whitman, depict the intensities of war and is set beside one of Haydn's finest compositions.
