With Three Pieces in Old Style, Henryk Górecki created a work that was rooted in the soil of his Polish home. Scored for strings and featuring evocative modal melodies, the simple style was an early example of Górecki’s talent for combining traditional materials with modern effects. It is followed in today’s programme by CPE Bach’s virtuosic Concerto for Flute in D Minor, which was written fairly early in the composer’s career: around 1747. Played today by CLS and flautist Karen Jones, it is an adventurous and unusual work that seems ahead of its time. Lastly, we showcase the prodigious talent of Mendelssohn, whose String Symphony No 10 in B Minor demonstrates that, even as a teenager, the composer had an understanding of and an affinity with the string orchestra.
