We are delighted to announce that we have received an extremely generous grant from the City of London Corporation's City Bridge Trust of £85,700 over three years, towards our current work with sick and disabled children in Great Ormond Street Hospital, and enabling us also to expand this project to Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals next year. This project will offer the widest possible access to creative and musical activities to hundreds of extremely sick and disabled children in London who are unable to attend performances or music lessons.
This grant will allow us to develop our existing programme Music for Children which is in its thirteenth year, providing performances and workshops in children's wards and hospital schools. Music is seen as a priority by many hospitals due to its accessibility to children of a wide range of abilities, including non-vocal and non-English-speaking children. Where possible, the children join in with percussion instruments or by active physical response to the music, and even compose and record their own music. This grant will enable our highly trained musicians, who already spend 100 days a year in a wide range of community settings, to reach out to a greater number of severely ill and disabled children who (along with their parents) often need relief from the stress, loneliness and boredom of being in hospital.
